7 Dimensions of Wellness

There are many factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle and overall wellness. When most people think of a healthy lifestyle, normally physical activity and a healthy diet come to mind; however, wellness is much more than merely physical health, exercise or nutrition. There are seven dimensions of wellness that can improve quality of life.

Encompasses a variety of factors including well balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and obtaining from harmful habits.

Emotional Wellness

Encompasses being optimistic, trusting of others, having high self-esteem, and managing stress. People who manage stress well and have a high level of emotional wellness have more time to enjoy life.

Intellectual Wellness

Encompasses engaging your mind in critical thinking, applying daily knowledge, being open minded, and a sense of humor. People who possess a high level of intellectual wellness have an active mind to grow.

Spiritual Wellness

Encompasses a sense that life is meaningful. This involves having life principles and values that give direction in one’s life. Many times this means having faith in something beyond yourself.

Interpersonal Wellness

Encompasses having satisfying relationships. This includes creating a network of family and friends that love and care about you. A sense of peace with society will be a resulting factor.Diverse human hands showing unity

Environmental Wellness

This is the awareness of the welfare of the earth and your personal habits on the physical environment. It could involve reducing, reusing, recycling, and conservation practices. It also includes protecting yourself from hazardous environmental factors.

This involves making use of your gifts, skills, and talents in order to gain purpose and enrichment in your life. The choice of profession will allow you to use your passions to better the world.

 

 

All these dimensions interact continuously. It is important to note that focusing on one dimension can result in neglect of another dimension. Being balanced in all of these categories provides optimum wellness.
